On Thursday, Oct. 25, Cole and Zaily Bradshaw opened their new mobile business in Caliente, Life Café Coffee and Roasting Company.

All customers were greeted with smiling, happy faces and everyone in line waited eagerly to taste their drinks.

Some people who attended the Dutch Oven Cook-Off at Cathedral Gorge State Park, Sept. 15, came from far away, without even knowing the event was going to take place.

Such was the case with a man and his family from Texas and a woman on vacation from Italy.

As more miles are added to the new trail system near Caliente, the community is considering ways to accommodate the thousands of mountain bikers expected to visit the area annually.

Restaurants to keep them well-fed, kiosks, signs, and brochures to keep them well-informed and coffee shops to keep them well-caffeinated were some of the many ideas tossed around at a community meeting on Sept. 11. Drenched in sweat, Jon Prescott digs out a section of a new mountain bike trail near Caliente. As he works, he looks forward to the reward of riding on the new trail. “The physical labor is gratifying because you can see your progress throughout the days and weeks and months,” says the fit 30-year-old. “The full-time work crews who started building it last year have talked about having a similar perspective.”

In evenings and on weekends, three to four times a week, Jon rides the trails he has helped build and plan. [Read More]

The 113th annual Labor Day Weekend celebration in Pioche was once again loaded with events.

This year’s theme was “The Wild West is Calling.” The Labor Day Committee worked over the last 12 months to ensure there was something planned for everyone. From a golf tournament, a chalk art contest, and softball, to a street dance and many other activities held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, attendees had a variety of activities from which to choose.
