Celebrate the Wonder of Nevada Dark Skies with a Summer Photo Contest

There’s something magical about looking up at a truly dark sky—the kind that lets the Milky Way shine in its full brilliance, where shooting stars streak overhead and constellations feel close enough to touch. Here in Lincoln County, Nevada, we’re fortunate to have some of the most pristine night skies in the country. And this summer, there’s an exciting new way to celebrate them.

Starting Memorial Day, May 26, the Lincoln County Authority of Tourism and Nevada State Parks are launching the Dark Skies Photo Contest. Open to photographers of all skill levels, this contest invites locals and visitors alike to capture the wonder of our nighttime skies and share their best shots. With the contest running through Labor Day, September 1st, participants will have plenty of time—and plenty of starry nights—to get involved.

Five Unique Categories to Inspire Creativity

To ensure there’s a little something for everyone, the contest includes five themed categories. Each one is designed to showcase a different aspect of Nevada Dark Skies and life under them:

1. Starry Landscapes – This category encourages wide shots of Lincoln County’s signature landmarks set against the backdrop of the night sky. Think Cathedral Gorge, Echo Canyon, or towering rock formations lit by moonlight and stars.

2. Astrophotography – For those who love close-up celestial detail, this category focuses on artistic or scientific images of star trails, planets, or even deep-sky objects like nebulae and the Milky Way.

3. Nighttime Experiences – Perfect for lifestyle and candid photographers, this category highlights people interacting with the night: stargazing, hiking by headlamp, camping under the stars, or just enjoying a quiet night in nature.

4. Youth – Open to photographers 18 and under, this category aims to inspire the next generation of dark skies advocates. Parental permission is required for minors to participate.

5. Festival Exclusive – This unique category is only open to attendees of the upcoming Lincoln County Photo Festival, held September 19–21. Entries must be taken during the festival, with more details provided to registered participants.

Guidelines for Submission

All photos must be taken in Lincoln County—whether it’s last week or last year. Submissions should be lightly edited only (cropping, exposure, and contrast adjustments are allowed), and AI-generated images will not be accepted. The organizers emphasize authenticity and originality, aiming to showcase the true beauty of Nevada’s dark skies.

Photographers may submit one image per category. To enter, email your high-resolution photo to krsp@parks.nv.gov with the subject line “LC Dark Skies 25.” Be sure to include your name, photo title, location where it was taken, category, year, and a brief description.

By submitting, participants grant non-exclusive rights for the image to be used in promotional materials—with credit, of course. This helps further the shared mission of promoting night sky conservation and tourism in Lincoln County.

Capture Summer’s Celestial Highlights

This summer is packed with opportunities to experience and photograph Nevada Dark Skies. One highlight is the Perseid meteor shower in mid-August, known for producing dozens of bright meteors per hour at its peak. It’s a perfect chance to capture dramatic, otherworldly images—or just enjoy a family night beneath the stars.

Whether you’re photographing intricate celestial details or chronicling a peaceful moment with loved ones under a starlit sky, this contest is an invitation to slow down, look up, and appreciate the unique beauty of rural Nevada.

A Contest with a Greater Purpose

Beyond stunning visuals, the Dark Skies Photo Contest serves a deeper mission. Organizers hope to grow a local community of dark sky enthusiasts who will support future conservation efforts. By encouraging people to explore and photograph the night, the contest promotes awareness about the importance of protecting our skies from light pollution.

Moreover, these efforts align with global movements like International Dark Sky Week, which was celebrated last month from April 21–28. Originally launched in 2003, this annual event highlights the value of natural nightscapes and the need to preserve them for future generations.

Save the Date for the Fall Dark Skies Event

As the summer winds down, winners of the photo contest will be announced during a special Dark Skies event at Kershaw-Ryan State Park this fall. It’s an opportunity not only to recognize the talent of local photographers but also to gather as a community and celebrate the skies that make Lincoln County so special.

Never Forget ~ Forever Honor

2025 Caliente Memorial Day schedule

Memorial Day in Caliente, Nevada, is more than just a long weekend—it’s a deeply rooted tradition of remembrance, community pride, and small-town celebration. This year’s 2025 Caliente Memorial Day Weekend, running from Friday, May 23 to Monday, May 26, promises four full days of events that blend patriotism with play, honoring our heroes while bringing the community together in unforgettable ways.

Whether you’re a local looking forward to annual favorites or a first-time visitor ready to experience rural Nevada hospitality, this year’s schedule offers something for everyone—from classic parades and softball tournaments to BBQs, vendor fairs, live music, and lighted bike rides under the stars.

Friday, May 23: Kicking Off With Community and Celebration

The weekend kicks off with the Memorial Softball Tournament at Dixon Memorial Park, running throughout the weekend and drawing teams from across the region. From 11 AM to 1 PM, join locals at Nevada Bank & Trust for a Memorial BBQ—an annual lunchtime tradition filled with good food and friendly faces.

As the day winds down, head over to Rose Park for the opening of Vendor Village, where local makers, artisans, and food vendors will set up shop from 4 PM to 8 PM. Then, support the graduating class of 2025 at Lincoln High School’s commencement ceremony at 7 PM in the Rick Phillips Gym in Panaca.

Saturday, May 24: A Day Full of Small-Town Magic

Saturday is stacked with action, starting bright and early at 7 AM with a Pancake Breakfast by the 4-H Club at Rose Park. Fuel up, then lace your shoes for the 5K Fun Run and 1-Mile Walk through the stunning landscapes of Kershaw-Ryan State Park.

At 10 AM, don’t miss the heart of the celebration—the Memorial Day Parade on Clover Street—where flags wave, floats roll, and the whole town turns out. The day continues with the Caliente Depot Ribbon Cutting, the Heritage Box Car Museum tours, and the Caliente Farmers Market.

From 11 AM to 6 PM, Rose Park will be buzzing with activities: Vendor Village, bounce houses, and classic 4-H kids games. Don’t forget the Corn Hole Tournament at 2 PM—whether you’re competing or cheering from the sidelines, it’s always a hit.

Cap off the day with a unique Caliente favorite: Tall Bike Ed’s Light the Night Bike Ride at 8 PM, starting at the Clock Tower on Front Street. Bring your decorated bike and your best glow gear for a luminous ride through town.

Sunday, May 25: Veterans, Vintage Cars, and BBQ Vibes

Sunday keeps the momentum going with more softball and a Vendor Village encore from 10 AM to 3 PM. Classic car and motorcycle fans won’t want to miss the Memorial Classic Car & M/C Show at Rose Park, starting at noon.

Gravel Grinder Challenge: Lincoln County’s Ultimate Ride

March 31, 2025 by editor

nevada gravel grinder

Calling all gravel cycling enthusiasts! The Beaver Dam Gravel Grinder is Nevada’s premier gravel grinder event, offering cyclists a unique opportunity to traverse the diverse terrains of Beaver Dam State Park. Scheduled for June 21, 2025, this event promises an exhilarating ride through some of Nevada’s most scenic landscapes.

What is a Gravel Grinder?

Gravel grinders are cycling events that combine various surfaces—including asphalt, gravel, dirt, and even single-track trails—into a single race or ride. According to Mark Orton, a USA Cycling certified Level 1 coach, these events can feature courses ranging from hard-packed dirt to routes strewn with softball-sized rocks, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience for participants.

Event Details

  • Date: June 21, 2025
  • Location: Beaver Dam State Park, approximately three hours north of Las Vegas, near the Nevada-Utah border, in beautiful Lincoln County.
  • Registration: Open as of January 22, 2025. Interested riders can register through the event’s official website here.

Why Participate in the Beaver Dam Gravel Grinder?

Participating in the Beaver Dam Gravel Grinder offers more than just a challenging ride. Cyclists will experience the rugged beauty of Nevada’s canyon country, with routes that test endurance and skill across varied terrains. Additionally, the event fosters a sense of community among cycling enthusiasts, providing an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals.

Planning Your Beaver Dam State Park Trip

For those traveling from Las Vegas, the journey involves heading north on I-15, transitioning to US-93, and then following signs to Beaver Dam Road East. Detailed directions are available on the event’s website.

Given the park’s remote location, participants are encouraged to plan accommodations in advance. Beaver Dam State Park offers camping facilities, allowing riders to immerse themselves fully in the natural surroundings. It’s advisable to check the park’s reservation system and secure a spot ahead of time. There are also wonderful lodging options in the charming towns of Caliente, Panaca, Pioche, and Alamo. We recommend looking into reservations as soon as possible because the summer months tend to book up a fast. Camping at Beaver Dam State Park would be extremely convenient for the event, but if you’d like other options, Kershaw-Ryan and Cathedral Gorge State Parks would also be easily accessible.

The Vision of Kevin Boyle: Capturing the Spirit of Lincoln County

March 19, 2025 by editor

kevin boyle lincoln county nevada
Photography has the power to freeze time, preserve memories, and highlight the beauty of places that might otherwise be forgotten. When renowned Canadian photographer Kevin Boyle made his way from British Columbia to Lincoln County, Nevada, his goal was simple: to document two historic landmarks—Pioche’s Gem Theater and Carl’s Burgers in Caliente. But what he left behind is more than just images; it’s a stunning tribute to the heart and soul of our communities. kevin boyle photography

A Passion for Nostalgia and Storytelling

Kevin Boyle’s work is deeply personal. For over a decade, he has traveled across small towns in Canada, photographing historic structures that remind him of his childhood. His “architectural portraiture” style captures more than just a building—it tells a story, evokes emotions, and connects viewers to the past. When Kevin discovered the Gem Theater through digital exploration, he was immediately drawn to its unique charm. He knew it was a place that deserved to be documented. Soon after, Carl’s Burgers in Caliente caught his eye, and he wasted no time booking a flight to Lincoln County.

Keving Boyle: Finding Beauty in the Desert

Although Kevin had photographed other desert landscapes before, something about Lincoln County stood out. The dramatic desert light, the rich colors of historic buildings, and the welcoming spirit of the community reminded him of home. From the moment he arrived, he was met with warmth—locals stopping to chat, offering insights, and sharing their own memories of these landmarks.

The Challenges and Triumphs of the Perfect Shot

Capturing the Gem Theater was no small feat. The street’s natural slope, nearby lighting, and architectural details made it one of the most complex shoots Kevin had ever done. In the end, he meticulously combined ten different photographs to create the final masterpiece—one that allows viewers to see the building in a way the human eye naturally wouldn’t. Even more impressively, the QR code on the movie poster in his final image actually works! This means that when people in Canada or across the U.S. see his work, they can scan the code and instantly learn more about Pioche and its history.

Why Historic Photography Matters to Kevin Boyle

Kevin Boyle’s work isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about preservation. Through his lens, these buildings become more than just relics of the past; they become reminders of vibrant communities, stories of resilience, and places of shared history. His hope is that when someone sees his image of the Gem Theater, they’ll remember the first movie they watched there, the popcorn they shared, or the excitement they felt as the lights dimmed.

A Lasting Impression

Kevin Boyle’s visit to Lincoln County is a testament to the power of art in keeping history alive. Though his time here was brief, his images will endure—allowing future generations to appreciate and remember these beloved landmarks. Thank you so much for coming to our community and sharing your gift with us Kevin. To explore more of Kevin’s work, visit kevinboylestudio.com
