Nevada State Parks

Escape the Crowds: Why Lincoln County is Nevada’s True Outdoor Playground

October 21, 2025 by Lincoln County Authority of Tourism (LCAT)

Looking for wide-open spaces where you can hike, fish, camp, and explore without fighting for elbow room? It’s time to discover Lincoln County, Nevada.

Boasting 10,000 square miles of high desert beauty, Lincoln County is home to five distinct state parks and some of the most unique landscapes in the West. Whether you’re an RV camper, a backcountry hiker, a fishing enthusiast, or a family looking for a weekend escape, you’ll find it here.

Here’s a look at the adventures waiting for you.

Explore an ‘Otherworldly Dreamscape’ at Cathedral Gorge

If you visit only one park, make it this one. Cathedral Gorge State Park is formed from an ancient lakebed. Hundreds of thousands of years of erosion have carved the soft clay into dramatic cliffs, narrow canyons, and towering columns.

It’s a photographer’s paradise and a hiker’s delight. You can explore the slot canyons, climb to stunning viewpoints, and camp right among the unique formations.

Enjoy a Lush Oasis at Kershaw-Ryan

Just a short drive away, Kershaw-Ryan State Park feels like a different world. Nestled between steep canyon walls, this park is a lush garden oasis. It’s fed by a natural spring that supports wild grapevines, white oaks, and even an old fruit orchard planted by its original 1800s-era homesteaders.

With 16 campsites, picnic spots, hiking trails, and a children’s wading pool, Kershaw-Ryan is the perfect getaway for families.

Go Boating and Fishing at Echo Canyon & Spring Valley

If water is what you’re after, Lincoln County delivers.

Echo Canyon State Park is centered around a 65-acre reservoir, making it a popular spot for boating and fishing for rainbow trout and largemouth bass. It also features some of the largest campgrounds in the county, with 33 first-come, first-serve sites and 20 sites with full RV hook-ups, making it ideal for a comfortable stay.

For an even deeper dive into the Nevada backcountry, Spring Valley State Park offers another beautiful reservoir for boating and fishing. Its main campground has 37 sites with grills, water, and access to showers. For those wanting to really get away, the remote Ranch Campground offers seven primitive sites.

Find Wildlife at Beaver Dam State Park

For those seeking true remoteness, Beaver Dam State Park is your destination. Located about an hour from Caliente, this park is a designated Watchable Wildlife Area.

Its streams, waterfalls, and pine forests attract a huge variety of wildlife, including jackrabbits, porcupines, coyotes, bobcats, great blue herons, and even mountain lions. It’s a fantastic spot for hiking, fishing, and camping under the stars in one of its two developed campgrounds.

More Than Just Parks

The adventure doesn’t end there. Lincoln County is also home to the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge and the vast Basin and Range National Monument, offering hundreds of miles of unspoiled wilderness to explore.

For a dose of history, you can even visit the Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site, a preserved one-room schoolhouse that educated ranching children from 1922 to 1967.

From hiking and biking to camping and fishing, Lincoln County offers endless outdoor activities. Start planning your adventure!

Here are 10 compelling reasons why Lincoln County, Nevada deserves a spot on your travel radar.

1. Conquer Vast, Untamed Wilderness

Endless trails, rugged mountain ranges, and pristine landscapes await your exploration. This isn’t just a vacation; it’s an adventure.

2. State Park Paradise

Lincoln County boasts more state parks than any other county in Nevada – five in total! Step back in time at Cathedral Gorge, Beaver Dam, and Kershaw-Ryan, all established in 1935, and marvel at the natural wonders of Spring Valley and Echo Canyon, added in the late ’60s. Each park offers unique geological formations, diverse ecosystems, and unforgettable experiences.

3. A Surprising Slice of Vegas History

Did you know that Las Vegas’s roots lie within Lincoln County? Back in 1852, Brigham Young sent settlers to establish a Mormon fort in what is now Las Vegas, then part of Lincoln County. A 1909 legislative split birthed Clark County, forever changing the landscape. This fascinating historical tidbit adds another layer to the region’s rich tapestry.

4. A Town That Crossed State Lines

The charming town of Panaca, Nevada’s oldest, has a unique origin story. Founded in Utah in 1864, it later became part of Nevada after a border adjustment. This quirky detail, complete with a historic tax dispute, adds to Panaca’s captivating character.

5. Lincoln County: The Heart of the Great Basin

Immerse yourself in the vast and dramatic landscape of the Great Basin, North America’s largest desert. Lincoln County sits at its heart, offering a glimpse into a region shaped by millennia of geological activity and human history. Archaeological evidence reveals human presence dating back 8,000 years! Plus, its proximity to Great Basin National Park makes it the perfect launching point for exploring this natural wonder.

6. The Mystery of Area 51

Prepare for intrigue! Lincoln County is home to the infamous Area 51, a highly classified U.S. Air Force base shrouded in secrecy. Drive the Extraterrestrial Highway and ponder the mysteries surrounding this legendary site. Who knows what you might discover?

Forget expensive safaris – Lincoln County offers incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. Spot majestic birds of prey soaring overhead, hear the bugle of elk echoing through the valleys, catch a glimpse of wild horses galloping across the plains, and maybe even see a trophy mule deer. The warm springs of Alamo and Panaca even harbor rare fish and are perfect for snorkeling!

8. A Stargazer’s Dream

Escape the city lights and discover a celestial wonderland. Lincoln County’s minimal light pollution creates some of the darkest skies in the nation, perfect for stargazing. Witness meteor showers, capture stunning images of the Milky Way, and connect with the cosmos. Fingers crossed for future Dark Sky Park designation!

9. Guardians of the Heights – The Ancient Bristlecone Pines

Here, time whispers on the wind through the branches of ancient Bristlecone Pines. These gnarled sentinels, some of the oldest living things on Earth, cling to the heights near Pioche in the Highland Range and along the mountains overlooking the Great Basin Highway. Their presence is a humbling reminder of the vastness of time and the enduring spirit of the natural world. They are as ancient as they are mysterious, and discovering these incredible trees is an adventure in itself.

10. A Dry Town Oasis

In a state known for its vibrant nightlife, Panaca stands out as a unique anomaly: Nevada’s only dry town. With no alcohol sales and a strong religious influence, Panaca offers a different perspective on Nevada living. Many people appreciate the serene farming community for it’s quiet, laid back vibe.
